It’s message is as important as BlacKkKlansman, it just doesn’t accept where the high bar is set, and decides to pole vault out of the stadium is instead

Attempting to truly understand Sorry To Bother You is more than comfortably comparable to attempting to truly understand the situation the world currently finds itself in. Quite clearly this was the intention director Boots Riley had when conceptualising the film, but that doesn’t make it any less surreal, or any less mind-bendingly weird.

Cassius (Lakeith Stanfield) is desperate for a job, accepting the first offer he receives at a telemarketing company. But when his sales numbers stay low, a colleague advises him to use his ‘white voice’, changing Cassius’ whole outlook on the job, putting him in line for a promotion to become a ‘Power Caller.’

sorry to bother you

It’s a tough job to even manage to list the emotions and physical feelings Sorry To Bother You can excrete from the human body. Over and over again, with countless twists, and 180 degree turns, the story is filled with propelling moments that transcend the bounds of cinema. Some of the decisions Riley has taken to not just include but to embolden particular moments are outrightly outrageous, and understanding what is going on can often be much of the battle. Yet, after several periods of confusion, it can naturally be agreed that surrendering all sense of realism while watching Sorry To Bother You is the best decision any viewer could take.

Parts of it are hideous, parts are sickening, and the scene with the game show… That is disgusting. Disgusting on another level. No amount of horror based gore can prepare anyone for that. Riley deserves a round of applause for making it quite so ghastly.

The film is essentially a mess. An amalgamation of ideas, tropes, history, themes, shots and social commentary, overlapping and overwriting each other. Sorry To Bother You is eclectic and ridiculous, but it cannot be ignored and it will not be hidden. It’s message is as important as BlacKkKlansman, it just doesn’t accept where the high bar is set, and decides to pole vault out of the stadium is instead.
